For over 10, 000 years farmers have been carefully harvesting the seed from their crop, and storing it to be planted next growing season. Fast forward to 1996 when Multinational company Monsanto produces and patents Genetically modified crops, including soy and canola, and suddenly the question becomes – who owns the seed? Seed growers and “cleaners” Ross Murray from Canada and Maurice “Moe” Parr from Indiana in the states have been at the sharp end of this debate and are now travelling around Australia to warn farmers about the dangers of GM. Catherine Zengerer asked Moe how Monsanto came to own the farmers seeds.
