Its been alleged in Fairfax newspapers that Australian border protection authorities spent hours agonizing over how to protect a confidential source before alerting rescue authorities to the presence of an asylum seeker vessel that had hit trouble. The allegations have been met with disgust among refugee advocates.

They say that border protection and maritime authorities are failing to make full use of the intelligence they receive to ensure the safety of asylum seekers.
