The Federal government is expected to introduce new legislation this week that will ban refugees and asylum seekers on Nauru and Manus Island from ever entering Australia.

The new law would be backdated to include all refugees and asylum seekers from July 2013 and would ban them for life.

There is also confusion about whether the ban would extend to those already in Australia on bridging visas.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has described aspects of the bill as “ludicrous”, suggesting Labor might oppose the bill as it currently stands.
