On the 24th of April 2013 the Rana Plaza garment factory collapsed in Bangladesh claiming 1,129 lives and injuring a further 2,000. It prompted worldwide outcry for the conditions in sweatshops. However, the terrible disaster provided the impetus to enact the Bangladesh Fire and Building Safety Accord, which protects workers’ rights. One year on, 130 companies have signed the legally binding agreement. However, there is still a great need for improvement.
