Since 2005 the Queensland river systems have been protected under the Wild Rivers Act. The state government however, has now repealed this legislation, allowing greater opportunities for economic developments. But what impact will this have on the environment? Environmental scientists, the Queensland Greens and Labor Party stress the importance of the old legislation and how potential mining could have detrimental impacts on the river systems.
