Palm Island is a small island off the Queensland coast, but its been host to some big politics. Riots broke out after the death of Moolronji Dalmajeei while he was in custody in 2004. But beyond the riots: Palm Island has a 90% unemployment rate, no property rights and living conditions are reported as sub-standard. In protest, The Palm Island council have banned public servants from stepping foot on the island. They say the figures speak for themselves, and the QLD government is accountable. But the premier’s office has labeled the policy as “apartheid” and plans to continue sending public servants onto the Island.
