Furthermore, the UNHCR report on Asylum Seekers shows that Australian asylum seeker numbers were down in 2011 from 13,000 to 11,500. The government says this proves their asylum seekers policy to stem the flow of refugees into Australia is working. However, the UNHCR report states that continual political infighting about humanitarian policy in Australia is having a negative effect on those who need protection from persecution. The Green Senator and asylum seeker spokes person Sarah Hanson-Young agrees. So does the director of pro-refugee group Welcome to Australia, Brad Chilcott.

A fourth person has been arrested in relation to a people suggling ring operating in Australia and Thailand. So far, six people have now been arrested over their alleged involvement in the international people smuggling ring. Four in Australia and two in Thailand.
