Tourmoil and controversy have faced the family of Mulrunji Doomadgee and the community of Palm Island since November 2004, when Mulrunji died in police custody. As court proceedings continue into uncovering the cause of Mulrunji’s death, an alleged ringleader of the now notorious Palm Island riots faced court in Townsville. However as Ivy Fisher reports, his lawyer successfully had the case moved to Brisbane based on the negative perceptions of Palm Islanders by a selection of Townsville residents. Is Townsville descending into history books as Australia’s most racist town – or has the Palm Island cases just highlighted a problem that has for too long been buried as a serious issue facing 21st Century Australia?
