British oil company BP, the company responsible for the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill, has this week had its environmental plan for oil drilling in the Great Australian Bight rejected by the offshore drilling regulatory authority NOPSEMA. BP says it will resubmit in spite of grave environmental concerns about the dire effects of any oil spill in the area. Senator Nick Xenophon says there should be ministerial oversight in any decision to drill in what would be dangerous conditions in a fragile environment.
