New law raises press freedom fears in East Timor

Press freedom in East Timor may be adversely affected by a proposed media law. Human rights activists and journalists are urging the president of East Timor Taur Matan Ruak to refuse to sign it into law, after it passed the East Timorese parliament on May 6 of this year. If passed, the Media Act would limit and control the information available to citizens in order to hide potentially embarrassing revelations.
