Instead of doing away with media self-regulation, a new body will be created by the government to oversee the industry’s own watchdogsAndrea Carson is a lecturer the University of Melbourne, and a specialist in the study of newspapers. She spoke to me a little earlier today.

The communications minister Stephen Conroy once compared the Press Council to a lap dog. But today his new media regulations have left the Press Council intact as the watchdog for standards in Australia’s print media. Conroy says that the Press Council has made improvements, so the new regulations leave the industry-funded body in place.
