Over eight hundred journalists went on strike yesterday as Fairfax announced a proposal for the off-shoring of over sixty sub-editing positions. The move has sparked increased concern over the reports that journalism jobs are in decline. The proposal has come as a surprise to print and online journalists who fear they will be made redundant. There is also concern as other reports revealed that at least four hundred more positions could further be cut from Fairfax branches including the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Illawara Mercury, Newcastle Herald and The Australian Financial Review. Despite the job cuts, some are arguing that this is not beginning of the end of journalism.
