In many countries it’s a given, but in Australia having paid time off when you have a baby is seen to be a privilege rather than a right. Currently a government commission is looking into the feasibility of introducing paid maternity leave. A report just released political analyst Jessica Brown at the think tank the Centre for Independent Studies argues that taxpayers should not have to contribute to the cost of such a scheme, but that the parents should pay themselves.
