The summer has just arrived with a forecast of scorching weather just weeks away, and renter and climate advocates are concerned about the season.

Australia is experiencing its first El Niño summer since 2019, and research suggests the coming months will be the hottest the country has seen in over 100 000 years.

With the nation plunging further into a housing crisis, low-income communities and renters will be the hardest hit by summer heat.

89 per cent of low income earners surveyed by ACCOSS said their homes are very hot in summer, with some describing temperatures as ‘unbearable’.

Member of Climate Justice Network, Leena Sudano says the impacts of climate for low-income renters will be severe this summer.
