A recent evaluation of income management schemes in the Northern Territory reveals mixed views about the scheme, which was introduced as part of the NT Intervention in 2008. According to the report, many people feel a strong sense of having been treated unfairly and being disempowered. Anti-intervention activists say they would prefer to see money redirected to counselling and social services.

Questions over whether income management acts as a control mechanism or whether it builds capacity for self-reliance in the long-term are still being evaluated, with the full report on the scheme due in 2014.
