The Murray Darling Basin Authority has today admitted that a leaked figure of 2800 giglalitres reflects their “current thinking” about how much water is needed to save the river system.

Irrigators say they had already been briefed with this figure and would not be happy if it turned out to be the final one, due to be announced in November. Conservationists are also unhappy, saying the amount is nowhere near enough for the environment and that the MDBA has handled the whole decision process very badly.
