That’s the question that will plague the NSW parliament when it resumes next month to debate the ‘Truth in Labelling’ Bill. The Greens say they introduced the legislation, also known as the Free-Range Eggs Bill, to stop dishonest producers from misleading consumers about how laying hens are treated.

They want farmers who claim their eggs are free-range to guarantee their chickens have plenty of roaming space and better general standards of care. But while the egg industry agrees there should be greater legal clarity as to what exactly constitutes a ‘free-range egg’, it says the definition outlined in the proposed Bill is unrealistic.
