Animal welfare groups in Victoria are renewing their calls for a ban on jumps racing after a horse died at Warrnambool’s May Racing Carnival yesterday. Last year, Racing Victoria ordered the jumps racing industry to reduce the number of horse deaths. The industry has responded to this by trying to make the jumps safer. But Glenys Oogjes, Executive Director of Animals Australia, says the only way to reduce the deaths is by banning the sport altogether.
