25 years ago today, scientists from the British Antarctic Survey made the shocking announcement that there was a huge hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica. They linked the decline in ozone levels to the rise in chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs. An international solution was found in 1987 under the Montreal Protocol, which phased out CFCs by producing substitutes to these harmful chemicals. But there’s no doubt that damage has already been done. So, is the ozone layer on the road to recovery?
