In what has been described as a quasi-democratic process, Iranians are voting today to elect a new president. But their choice is extremely narrow. There is doubt about which candidate will get the most votes but there is no doubt that he will be a conservative traditionalist approved by the Guardian Council.

The people of Iran  go to the polls to  elect a new  President today but the process will be far from democratic. The all powerful  Guardian Council has allowed only candidates who support their traditional views to stand. As one Iranian citizen has tweeted, ‘ Iran is a handcuffed democracy.”
