Aboriginal communities in New South Wales will this week be looking to the Canadian First Nation peoples – in the search for successful education and employment strategies. Trina Maher, member of the Mattagami First Nation and Manager of Aboriginal Skills and Learning at the Aboriginal Human Resource Development Council of Canada will speak to communities in the Nambucca and Macleay Valleys this week. Manager of Wesley Uniting Employment in Nambucca Kevin Bird says it will be an opportunity for Australian Aboriginal communities to learn about new initiatives. In particular, Mr Bird is interested in how the Canadian approach uses the strong family ties among Aboriginal people to improve their employment prospects.
