Humans kill 80 million sharks a year: research

Sharks play a vital role in the health of marine ecosystems. As a keystone species, without them, entire ecosystems can collapse.

Using data collected between 2012 and 2019, a study published in the journal Science found nearly 80 million sharks a year are killed by humans. Of that number, 25 million were threatened species.
