The day after the release of the Senate report on Management of the Great Barrier Reef recommending a cap or a ban on dredge spoil dumping in the Marine Park, Greens Senator Larissa Waters has introduced a bill to ban the dumping of dredge spoil from the Abbot Point port expansion. Opinions remain divided as to whether preservation of the World Heritage site’s health should be prioritised over the managed expansion of Queensland ports to meet the demand of trade markets.
