A class action brought by around 1900 asylum seekers has been successful, with the Government agreeing to pay close to $70 million in compensation for mistreatment while in detention.

Claimants say the win acknowledges the suffering they have endured, while others claim that the decision to settle is an admission of wrongdoing and guilt on behalf of the Government.
