Queensland’s oldest and largest coal power station in Gladstone, could see an early retirement with co-owner, multinational mining company, Rio Tinto, flagging potential closure as early as 2029.

While some environmental advocates welcome the move, it’s sparked serious questions amongst others.

Queensland Conservation Council say early closure is necessary for a shift to renewables.

QCC Director Dave Copeman is urging state government for clarity on planning for timely closure of other ageing coal power stations.
