Two gay marriage bills were introduced to Federal Parliament today, but both appear to be doomed. Greens MP, Adam Bandt revealed his combined effort with Tasmanian Independent, Andrew Wilkie to legalise gay marriage. A second bill by Labor backbencher, Stephen Jones, stressed that there would be no obligation for religious groups to perform gay marriages.

Despite cross-party momentum, it is unlikely that either bill will be passed through the House of Representatives. However, Adam Bandt remains optimistic that we will see federal reform on gay marriage this year.
