Today the Toyota Manufacturing plant in Altona,Victoria began to lay off 350 of its employees. Union representatives are disappointed by the layoff process, as many workers are not being offered the industry standard voluntary redundancy packages.
But economists say the bigger picture is a struggling manufacturing industry that might not recover from a fall in exports due to Australia’s two-speed economy and high exchange rate.
