Julia Gillard today announced that the government would take steps to setup a national register of foreign owned agricultural land. But farmers and experts in the field say that the register won’t see an end to the debate on foreign ownership of farms. In fact, many see it as the first step before the true debate on foreign ownership gets underway. Some farmers are already calling for a more detail to be revealed about the activities on the farms and the resources they use.
