The federal government has been spruiking its ‘faster rail’ program for some time, arguing rail connections will be key to revitalising small towns and dealing with population growth in capital cities.

But researchers say the plan needs to be treated with caution, as international examples show fast rail can actually cause businesses to relocate away from small towns.
