European elections – wake-up call or business as usual?

For the first time ever the European political parties had chosen candidates for the post of Commission President. However, with no clear winner of the elections and the rise of Eurosceptic parties, it is uncertain who will lead the EU’s executive.National governments gathered for a first informal meeting in Brussels on Tuesday, but nothing has been decided yet. During the next EU summit at the end of June EU leaders are expected to appoint the next President of the European Commission. The European Parliament will sit for the first time in July. The results of the European elections are no surprise as opinion polls in recent months suggested strong gains by Eurosceptic parties. In some countries like France, the UK and Denmark they even came first before the established parties. So what are the consequences?
