Cystic fibrosis is a genetic condition that affects people’s lungs and digestive systems. Those who have cystic fibrosis are lucky to live to their mid thirties. However, there is now a drug that can help those who have a specific gene mutation known as G551D. The drug, known as Kalydeco, is able to turn off the genetic defect causing cystic fibrosis. Kalydeco is currently not on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme but the cystic fibrosis community holds onto the hope that it will be one day soon.
