The premier of South Australia is quite keen on mining but this week he handed out a top environmental; award to an indigenous woman who has resolutely opposed mining exploration in her traditional country. The area around Ceduna is the largest stretch of stunted mallee left in the world and Sue Coleman Haseldine has led a group of locals in blockades to keep mining companies out. She has now won the state’s top prize for environemtal resource management. She says she was glad to shake the premier’s hand but the fight has only just begun.
