1976 marked the ban on advertising of tobacco products in Australia. 30 years later the end of tobacco farming in Australia was formally announced. Since then, many other restrictions have been enforced to curb the smoking habit, but tobacco continues to be sold and consumed in Australia. Yesterday the NSW government announced a ban on all cigarette displays. This action was prompted by a research confirming 27 per cent of cigarette purchase was impulsive. Apparently a trigger to this impulse was the prominent display of cigarettes at supermarkets and other sales outlets. Is there any substance to this claim or is it all smoke and hot air?
