As water becomes increasingly scarce in Australia cities are seriously planning desalination plants. In dry South Australia there are two planned, one for city folks and another to supply water for the current mining boom in the state’s northern deserts. But there are concerns that the environmental cost of dumping salt into fish breeding grounds could outweigh the benefits of having more fresh water.
