China executes thousands of people each year. In a new report, Amnesty International claims the Chinese government routinely abuses both its own national laws and international standards in the course of these executions. In a new report titled: Executed “according to law”? – the Death Penalty in China, Amnesty details the potential for human rights violations at every stage of the criminal justice process leading up to execution. With a lack of legal representation, the constant risk of torture combined with inadequate court procedures often mean due process is denied to those who end up facing the death penalty. To remedy this, Amnesty is calling upon China to ratify and implement the international treaties it is already party to, including the Convention Against Torture and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
