Critics of Pacific trade push warn of dangers in US demands on IP

At the APEC summit in Hawaii, leaders of nine Asia-Pacific nations have agreed on a framework for a trade and investment deal. But trade experts have hosed down excitement amongst Australia’s farming community, warning that the US is unlikely to drop protections for its agricultural sector in an election year.

While some trade commentators are positive about the creation of a new framework for commercial co-operation, others remain wary.Australia’s trade and investment watchdog has warned that the US is seeking to strengthen patents and interfere in the way we price and regulate medicine.
