New Zealand born Brendan Thoms has lived in Australia with his Aboriginal mother since he was five-years-old.

Under an Australian policy, he faces deportation for serving more than twelve months in jail.

But despite no longer holding New Zealand ties, and being of First Australian Palawa descent, the Federal Government says this is not grounds for citizenship.

It’s the second case within four months where the Federal Government has denied citizenship despite proof of indigenous background.
