The Senate has suspended One Nation Senator Pauline Hanson for 7 days after she wore a Burka in Parliament. This is the second time Senator Hanson has worn the garment following a previous incident in 2017.

Senator Hanson entered the chamber on Monday wearing the Burka in protest of the Senate rejecting her bill that would ban face coverings in public, a policy she has repeatedly pushed for.

Fellow senators including Mehreen Faruqi and Fatima Payman have condemned the incident as ‘racist and disrespectful’ to Muslim Australians.

Hanson is unapologetic for her actions, stating in a Facebook post “if these hypocrites don’t want me to wear a Burka, they can always support my ban”.
