A decision to build a Big W department store on a sporting field and former aboriginal burial site in the New South Wales town of Moree has sparked controversy amongst local residents. The decision follows the recent rejection of an aboriginal land claim over the field, due to the site’s use as a recreation space. Lyall Munro Snr, public officer for the murri taskforce in Moree, Lyall Munro Jnr, prominant aboriginal activist and spokesperson for the aboriginal community in Sydney, David Aber, General Manager at the Moree Shire Council, and Benedict Brooks, media relations manager at Big W spoke to Dominic Geiger about the issue.
