Seventeen former terrorism suspects from Guantanamo Bay could be resettled in Australia as asylum seekers. The Australian government is reviewing a request from the Obama administration to accept the detainees – members of an ethnic minority from China – as America attempts to shut down the unpopular prison. China maintains that the men are terrorists and it’s pressuring Australia to reject the request. But the Australian Uighur community has called on the government to welcome the men. It says they would be persecuted if sent back to China.
