Today Indonesian authorities are considering calling off the search for survivors of the asylum seeker boat that sank of the coast of Java. The boat carrying about sixty asylum seekers crashed two days ago, five hundred kilometres from Christmas Island killing eight. The tragedy has again ignited the debate surrounding Australia’s asylum seeker policy.

But are we asking the right questions? The focus has been on the government’s policy but how was it the boat was allowed to leave Indonesia in the first place?
