There’s a similar push for autonomy happening northwest of Arnhem Land. Over the last 20 years, leaders from the Torres Strait Islands have been looking at many options for self-governance, and are getting closer to achieving their aims. Long term proponent of the movement Father Getano Lui says Torres Strait Islanders are tired of being a “minority of a minority” and want to control their own affairs. He recently attended the Pacific Island Leaders Forum and put his views to Prime Ministeer Kevin Rudd.
