As an artist slowly paints a portrait subject they get to know them so intimately.

But, how much of that translates to the canvas? And, does the subject exert any power over the final image?

Robert Hannaford is an artist who has painted portraits over the past 50 years and he caught up with The Wire to talk about his artistic practice and whether the personality behind the image makes a difference.

An exhibition of Robert Hannaford’s works will be at the Art Gallery of South Australia from 2 July – 9 October 2016.
