The nationwide embrace of desalination plants has come under fire after one NSW plant was shut down after only two years in operation. The NSW government announced that the plant would be switched off after recent rainfall filled dams to near capacity. Desalination has been criticised for being an expensive and ineffective solution for water management. But more than 3 desalination plants are currently being constructed nationwide.
