A new film explores the post-conflict situation in Rwanda, exploring the struggle Rwandans experienced living with the dark history of the genocide that killed 800,000 people and left millions more displaced.
The film Ben’Imana focuses on the effort to find a form of restorative justice to deal with both the victims and perpetrators of horrific violence during the 1994 genocide.
It focuses on the story of two sisters, one involved in the Rwanditude program who has forgiven the perpetrators of violence and a sister who is concerned painful memories will be suppressed in this effort to achieve national reconciliation.
Stephen Hill asked the film’s director Marie-Clémentine Dusabejambo to describe the background of these tribunals upon which the film is based.
