Last night in Darwin, the Northern Territory Parliament amended their child protection laws. In the aftermath of the tragic death of Kumanjayi Little Baby, the Territory government claims the overhaul will do more to keep children safe.
But the reforms have attracted criticism from many Aboriginal leaders and human rights organisations, raising concerns that the bill could weaken the critical Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principle – the safeguards that communities fought for in the wake of the Stolen Generations in order to keep Indigenous children safely connected to their family, culture, language, community and Country.
