Media and Government contribute to fear of terrorism

“Home-grown terror” and “Children of Osama” have been some of this week’s headlines after the spate of terrorist arrests in Sydney and Melbourne. This has raised concerns about how media and the Government contribute to fear and create messages of anti-Muslim instead of anti-terror. DAVID BONYTHON WRIGHT, counsellor to Bali terrorism attack survivor Jason McCartney attended an assembly in Texas on terrorism’s psychological impact. He says the emotive words and phrases the media and the Government use can cause the community to over-react. He says people need to realise they have more chance of dying in a car accident or from heart disease than from terrorism.
