Australian detention centres such as Baxter and Woomera cop a lot of criticism for the treatment of refugees – but things are worse overseas. Amnesty International has been keeping an eye on Greece for a while after being tipped off about appalling conditions in detention centres there. They recently released a report detailing the inhumane treatment of asylum seekers, including rape, poor hygiene and physical abuse: “Out of the Spotlight: the rights of foreigners and minorities are still a grey area in Greece”. Dr Graham Thom is the Refugee Co-ordinator for Amnesty International Australia, and explains what the investigation discovered.
