The 71 Filipino and Indian crew of the Mawashi Algaseem have spent the last eight months off Port Adelaide, being fed and looked after by locals after their Saudi Arabian employers abandoned them. The ship was refused fuel because the owners hadn’t paid the bills and now is about to be sold off to pay the fuel bill and the crew. Barry Earthey and his wife are among many locals at the Port community who have befriended the men who he says are distressed at being separated from families who have no means of support. The ship will be sold this month to pay bills and the men will then be repatriated.
