Psychologist Sophie Bibrowska works with refugees from eastern Europe and she has found that they all, whether Bosnian, Serb or Croat, share the same horrific nightmare of being chased and dismembered by a shadowy ‘enemy’.She says this is making it very difficult for these ethnic groups to become part of the Australian community as deep down they distrust all neighbours because their experience was that neighbours can turn on one and kill. She’s experimenting with ways to help them get past these subconscious barriers and start mixing with Australians.
